چکیده

The superiority of deformable human fingertips as compared to hard robot gripper fingers for grasping and manipulation has lead to a number of investigations with robot hands employing elastomers or materials such as fluids or powders beneath a membrane at the fingertips. When using such materials, it is important to account for their properties during manipulation. The rigid-body rolling kinematic equations developed and applied in previous investigations do not consider loadand object-dependent fingertip deformations. This paper is concerned with determining the kinematic effects of soft fingertips during manipulation with rolling. The long-term goal of this work is to produce a model of rolling with soft fingertips that can be incorporated into a real-time control system to produce current best estimates of contact locations and velocities when planning and executing

Elastic Model of a Deformable Fingertip

To date, much research has been done on the manipulation of objects by softfingered robotic hands. Most of these studies, particularly the earlier ones, focused only on contact mechanisms on various soft fingers. More recently, there has been an increase in the number of studies investigating the sensing mechanisms of the human hand and designing control systems in robotic applications to emula...

Rolling Locomotion of Deformable Tensegrity Structure

In this paper, we propose that a deformable robot with a tensegrity structure can crawl and describe its performance in practical experiments and a gait description. We apply Miller index in crystallography to describe the gait of a prototype, and then classify two contact conditions of the prototype. We demonstrate rolling of a six-strut tensegrity to confirm the movement of the prototype from...

Animating a Synergy-Based Deformable Hand Avatar for Haptic Grasping

A 3D deformable hand avatar for virtual grasping using multiple single-contact-point haptic devices is introduced. The proposed technique has two main advantages. First, the whole hand motion is reconstructed by measuring only fingertips positions and using a biomechanical model of the hand along with the postural synergies characterizing grasping actions. Secondly, this technique requires only...

Robotic Grasping and Fine Manipulation Using Soft Fingertip

The ability to create stable, encompassing grasps with subsets of fingers is greatly increased by using soft fingertips that deform during contact and apply a larger space of frictional forces and moments than their rigid counterparts. This is true not only for human grasping, but also for robotic hands using fingertips made of soft materials. The superiority of deformable human fingertips as c...

Distinct molecular and cellular contributions to stabilizing selectin-mediated rolling under flow

Leukocytes roll on selectins at nearly constant velocities over a wide range of wall shear stresses. Ligand-coupled microspheres roll faster on selectins and detach quickly as wall shear stress is increased. To examine whether the superior performance of leukocytes reflects molecular features of native ligands or cellular properties that favor selectin-mediated rolling, we coupled structurally ...
